Frequently Asked Questions

  • A midwife is a trained professional who specializes in assisting women during pregnancy, labor, and childbirth. They provide comprehensive care to expectant mothers, focusing on the natural process of childbirth while offering medical expertise when necessary. Midwives are skilled in monitoring the health and well-being of both the mother and baby throughout pregnancy, assisting with labor, and providing postpartum support.

In the state of Tennessee, midwives are legally able to attend births in the home setting and are regulated and licensed by the state.

  • Homebirth with a trained midwife present can be safe, especially for low-risk pregnancies, but it depends on various factors, including the health of the mother and baby, the experience and qualifications of the midwife, and the availability of a plan for emergency care if needed. For many women, having a midwife present during homebirth is considered a safe and empowering option, but it is important to consider both the benefits and the risks.

  • Candidates for homebirth are those who have low risk factors for adverse outcomes or emergencies during their labor and delivery. This can be determined based off of personal health history, previous birth experiences and other underlying risk factors.

  • Yes. Embrace Birth Co. has training in both breech and twin births. Determining if you are a candidate for a homebirth is dependent on many factors and requires a shared-decision making process with the midwife and client.

  • The benefits of homebirth primarily revolve around the ability to create a personalized, calm, and supportive birth experience. For women with low-risk pregnancies, homebirth can offer a more intimate and empowering alternative to hospital births, with lower rates of medical interventions, reduced costs, and the comfort of being at home. There is a lower instance of unwanted interventions, a decreased cesarean rate and decreased instance of episiotomies, forcep/vacuum deliveries and epidurals. You have the freedom to choose your own birth plan, give birth in the water if you would like and have a longer period of bonding with your baby.
